Finding the right treatment program can be challenging; there are a lot of different programs out there, and while many of them are very different, a large amount are very similar.

It can be tempting to simply enroll in the first program that shows up in your search results, but spending a little bit of time finding the right type of program can mean all the difference in the world for your recovery.

For many people, enrolling in a partial hospitalization program is what’s best for their healing.

In this article, we’re going to discuss partial hospitalization programs, where they fall within the continuum of care and how to know if they’re the right next step in your recovery journey.

What is a partial hospitalization program?

Treatment services generally are in one of two categories: inpatient or outpatient.

Outpatient treatments are part-time programs that offer some level of flexibility and freedom to clients, while inpatient services (also known as residential programs) are more intensive and require significantly more of a time commitment from clients.

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is sort of in between the two, as it’s a structured treatment program for those who require ongoing care, but not on the level of 24-hour care.

The partial hospitalization program hours vary slightly per facility, but treatment usually lasts the majority of the day, typically for three-to-five days per week. While most of the day is spent in treatments at the center, clients are able to return home at the end of every day.

Requirements for partial hospitalization program

Partial hospitalization programs don’t operate as colleges do, picking and choosing who they want to accept; rather, it’s a matter of whether or not the program is a good fit for you.

PHP is best suited for individuals who:

  • Received treatment previously but didn’t maintain long-term change
  • Require additional support in recovery, but not constant supervision
  • Someone who wants to (and can) maintain other areas of their life through treatment
  • Are not a danger to themselves or others
  • Are self-motivated to actively participate in treatment and make a lasting change

As beneficial as PHP generally is, it’s not the most efficient form of treatment for everyone.

Is a PHP right for me?

Truthfully, only you and your medical provider can clearly discern if enrolling in a PHP is the best next step for your recovery. Some people need this level of support at a center point in their recovery journey, while for others, it will be too intense, and potentially do more harm than good.
